Cheap at half the price ...

Travelling home in the car, just me and the 4 year old.

The 6 o'clock news is on the radio. A woman is appealing to catch her husband's killer, naturally, she is distraught.

Luckily the heater in my car sounds like a vacuum cleaner, the 4 year old doesn't hear the full details, but she does understand that the woman is crying.

4 year old - Why is that lady crying?

Me - Her husband has died

4 year old - She must be very sad

Me - Yes, she is

4 year old - She won't ever see him again

Me - No

She ponders awhile. I hope this is the end of the conversation, not wanting a full death discussion before bedtime, but no ...

4 year old - She can buy a new husband though can't she?

Me - Umm, I don't think so

4 year old - Yes Mummy, she can buy a new husband and marry him like you and Daddy *

Me - How much do you think a husband costs?

4 year old - I don't know .... fiftyten pounds maybe.

* I would like to point out that although my husband and I are married, there was no dowry involved much to my fathers disappointment.

If she was speaking American English I would totally agree. Husbands cost about fiftyten lbs.

My guess is it's right around 27 kilos. I'm pretty sure between the two of us that is what we gained after we got married.

As for $$ I would say she's still right but she's underestimating a little. :) (I mean when we add them to the grocery list, car insurance, health insurance, etc)

God, I love these conversations! Wish I'd recorded more of them myself. Frequently find myself wincing and crashing around with the saucepans a bit more as I serve up kids' supper to the accompaniment of the 6 o'clock news on telly with its tales of murder and abduction while three little pairs of eyes widen with every word and picture. Shame on me!

Came here from Millenium Housewife. Will be back!

I think I've got fiftyten pounds saved up somewhere. Can your 4 year-old please let me know where I can go to peruse the available selection??

I like it! fiftyten pounds. Smart girl.
Tonight, however, I am extremely ANNOYED with mine and think that is too expensive so I am auctioning off Husband starting at fiftyten pence.
Any takers?

I love it! Perhaps they go up and down in value depending on how good they are!

Aww she is so adorable!
My husband was a bargain if that's how much the going rate is . . .

That's so cute!

If husbands are for sale, is it possible for me to buy a second one? You know, just to help out? Ask her if I put up the fiftyten pounds for another husband if he'll help with the housework. I think this is an important question.

Excellent, I'm putting mine on eBay.

Well, even allowing for the Global Economic Crisis and UK Inflation, I think fiftyten is a bit steep. Here in Australia, I got mine for free, AND a set of steak knives.

But fiftyten is a nice round number. I think I will drop "42" when someone asks me the meaning of life and try "fiftyten".
